Mausoleum at Halicarnassus from Bodrum Cruise Port
Remains of one of the Seven Wonders — the tomb that gave us the word 'mausoleum', a short walk from the castle.
Distance
About 1.2 km / 15–20 min on foot
Travel time
15–20 minutes walking from the port
Time needed
Allow 45–60 minutes on site plus walking
The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus was built around 350 BC for Mausolus, ruler of Caria, and ranked among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Today a modest open-air site with foundations, column fragments and interpretive panels sits in central Bodrum — reachable on foot from both the castle and the cruise port.
From Bodrum Castle, walk inland along Turgut Reis Caddesi for about 15 minutes to the Mausoleum site. From the cruise port, allow 20 minutes via the castle or a direct route through town. The site is compact — most visits take 30–45 minutes.
Little of the original structure survives; earthquakes and reuse of stone for Bodrum Castle depleted the monument over centuries. What remains is still powerful when you understand the scale of the original tomb and its place in ancient Halicarnassus.
The site pairs naturally with a castle visit — the Knights famously quarried Mausoleum marble for their fortress walls. A combined morning on foot covers both without any transport.
